Do you want to create intricate designs on your Cricut but don’t know how to slice? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Slice is a feature that can be a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to create amazing designs. In this blog post, we will walk you through how to slice on the Cricut Design Space software.

What is the Slice Tool?

Slice is a Cricut Design Space function that allows you to cut one picture out of another. It’s located at the bottom of the Layers panel, next to the other Design Space layer tools: Weld, Attach, Flatten, and Contour.

What Slice Actually Does

The Slice tool cuts an image from another image by “cutting out” one of the pictures. The Slice tool essentially generates new cut routes wherever the boundaries of the two images overlap.

It’s similar to a cookie cutter or a fancy hole punch: The Slice tool “punches out” the form of one picture from the form of the other.

The Slice tool, as you can see, reworks the original forms into entirely new shapes. Each of the distinct layers in the Layers panel will represent one of the new forms.

Why You Should Use Slice

You’ll be surprised at how much slice can accomplish once you start using it. The Slice tool is particularly useful for removing shapes and text from bigger background objects. It’s also possible to crop or remove undesired portions of images or shapes using this function.

Slice is a great tool for slicing up your images and videos. I’ve collected some of my favorite Slice uses below:

  • From the larger shape, you can remove a smaller one and create separate shapes or text.
  • Create a new, unique shape from two basic shapes in the Shapes panel.
  • Remove, crop, or trim undesirable portions of a photograph
  • Remove or remove a portion of the image by cutting it into sections and layering them.

You may not: Edit or rearrange a pre-made image from the Cricut library

How to Use the Slice Tool

You can cut one shape from another, combine overlapping shapes, or remove text from a shape using the Slice tool.

Here are the basic directions for using the Slice tool.

Arrange two pictures so that they are overlapped. Drag the images to overlap one another. Nothing happens if you attempt to slice two photos that aren’t overlapping.

Select both layers. Keep in mind that when working with images, you can only handle two layers at once using Slice. A gray bounding box will appear around both photos once you’ve chosen the two layers, and the individual layers in the Layers panel will be highlighted.

If you’re using the computer program, click the Slice button in the Layers panel or open the Actions menu at the bottom of your screen if you’re using the iOS or Android app.

Look at your results. To see your new forms, split the layers. Now you may modify each layer separately, and remove any you don’t need.

Slice is quite simple to use once you get the hang of it. It’s really simple!

Using Slice with Text

You may also cut text out of another picture with the Slice tool. The Slice tool works on all of the individual letters as a single layer. In most situations, therefore, cutting text with Slice is the same as cutting images with Slice.

Click on the layer’s name in the Layers panel and choose Text from the drop-down menu. Using any of the text tools, type a message on this new text layer.

Drag the text until it is overlapping another layer.

Select both layers and slice them.

After you’ve used Slice on a text layer, it will transform into a Slice Result layer – also known as an image layer. As a result, you won’t be able to change the typeface size or letter spacing any more.

Tips and Tricks for Working with the Slice Tool

I like Slice; it’s a good program, but there are certain limitations. Here are some helpful hints and techniques for using Slice.

Slice allows you to work on two layers at once. When utilizing Slice with pictures, you can only deal with two levels at one time. If you attempt to use the button after selecting more than two layers, it will be “grayed out,” and you won’t be able to utilize it.

Slice may be used on images that overlap. To utilize Slice, the two photos must be overlapping. Nothing will change if you Slice two images that aren’t positioned next to each other.

Slice will not work with Grouped images unless the other pictures in the Group are faded. To use the Slice tool on a Group of layers, you must first hide or ungroup other layers to enable it.

Text may be sliced, too. Slice, on the other hand, works with text as well. However, slicing text (particularly multi-layered text) has its own peculiarities.

Trimming Shapes using Slice

Sometimes you may need to take off a certain portion of a shape. For example, maybe I don’t want the tails on this arrow.

For the sake of this example, let’s say that I placed a photo in the middle of the arrow with several other objects on either side. All of a sudden, it has two distinct parts: one for each side (top and bottom).

After cutting the lumber, you must ungroup the two pieces of arrow (because you can only choose two shapes at a time to chop). Then pick the rectangle and the arrow, and hit Slice. But this time, you’ll also have a long side that you can delete. But there’s no need for a straight end on the arrow!

Where to Find Slice

You’ll find the Slice tool in the Layers Panel in the lower right corner of the screen, next to the Weld Tool. The Slice option may be found through a right-click menu as well.

On a mobile device, the Slice button is in the Actions sub-menu at the bottom of the screen, between Weld and Flatten.

Why is the Slice button grayed out?

If the Slice button is grayed out, it indicates that you can’t use your current choice with the Slice option. Make sure that you’ve selected only two layers and that each layer is Ungrouped and Visible before moving on.

How do I select more than one layer?

In order to utilize Slice, you must pick two layers in Design Space on Desktop. Here are some ideas for selecting more than one layer in Cricut Design Space On Desktop

  • To select both of two shapes, use a selection box to pick them.
  • To select individual layers, hold down the Shift key (on PC) or the Ctrl key (on Mac) while clicking on them on the Canvas.
  • While clicking on each layer in the Layers panel, hold down the Shift key (on PC) or the Ctrl key (on Mac) on your keyboard.

On Mobile

  • Select the other layer by tapping on it and dragging a selection box around both layers.
  • To select a layer on the Canvas, tap it once to select it, then long-press it to select it.
  • To select a layer in the layers panel, tap it once to select it, then long-press it to make it active.

Learning to slice

Cricut Design Space is a great program for creating how to slice on cricut design space. It has many features that are helpful and easy-to-use, but it also comes with its own limitations. Learning to use slice effectively will help with many types of design and even overcome some of the limitations.
