The idea of a certain gemstone being associated with a certain month of the year is a common concept but there are also certain flowers that are associated with the months. Some of these associations are based on when the flowers bloom as well as their traditional associations and other occasions that take place during the month.
But if you need to buy flowers for someone or a card, if you don’t know what their favourite flower is, then their birth month flowers can always be a good bet.

How to use birth month flowers in card making
While they are definitely a great idea for buying a bunch of flowers for someone with extra meaning, there’s a card making use for these flowers.
If you have images of any of these flowers, you can make them into a birthday greeting card for the month. So a picture of a snowdrop could have a message about a January birthday added to it.
The same goes for cross stitching or embroidering flowers. Choose flowers that are associated with a particular month to give to someone for their birthday or to sell as a card specifically for that month. You can see an example of a month listing featuring these different types of cards here.
Flowers for January
The most commonly associated flower with January is the carnation. The carnation has many associations including for weddings, Mother’s Day and St Patrick’s Day when used with greenery.

It is also the state flower of the US state of Ohio.
The carnation comes in various colours and these different colours have different subtle meanings. These include:
- Pink – affection
- Red – I Love You
- White – pure love
- Striped – regret at a love not shared
- Yellow – disappointment
The other flower associated with January is the snowdrop, which has seen a change in fortunes. At one time, the snowdrop was considered bad luck because it always seemed to be growing in graveyards.
But today this delicate little white flower is associated with hope and beauty as it is one of the first flowers to appear in winter with the promise of spring.
Flowers for February
The main flower for February is the violet and it is given to someone to let them know that you will always be there for them, so particularly favoured for a friend. It signifies watchfulness, loyalty and faithfulness.

The other flower is the primrose, which is a little more romantic, signifying that you can’t live without them.
Flowers for March
The flowers for March both have something in common – bright and cheery colouring for the time of the year when the sun begins to return to the day. The main flower is the daffodil, which means unequalled love.

Tthe other is the jonquil signifying desire for affection returned and also to convey sympathy. Because of their spring connections, both are associated with rebirth and new beginnings.
Flowers for April
The April flower is the daisy, signifying innocence, loyal love and purity as well as a secret between friends.

The sweet pea is the other flower, meaning blissful pleasure and also to say goodbye to someone, so ideal if someone is moving away or leaving a workplace.
Flowers for May
The two May flowers are very different; the lily of the valley and the hawthorn. Lily of the valley is a symbol of sweetness, humility and happiness, a great way to show that your life is complete with this person in it.

The hawthorn represents hope and supreme happiness as well as that you only want the best for the person you are giving it to.
Flowers for June
Rose is the main flower of June and its meaning are endless but of course, mainly associated with love.

The red rose tells someone you love them while a white rose signifies innocence and purity. Yellow roses can mean your love if fading but a bunch of roses can be used for gratitude, regardless of the colour.
The other flower for June is the honeysuckle, a symbol of the bonds of love of all types.
Flowers for July
The Larkspur is one of the flowers of July and again different colours mean different things. The pink flower is a sign of fickleness, white shows a happy nature while purple shows first love, so is great for an anniversary card. In general, this flower represents a strong bond of love.

The other flower is the water lily, symbolising purity and majesty. In the US, the lily and delphinium are also added to the list for July.
Flowers for August
The August flowers are both strong and bold flowers; the gladiolus and the poppy. Gladiolus is known as the ‘sword lily’ and represents remembrance, calmness, integrity and infatuation.

The poppy has different meanings for the colours; red for pleasure, white for consolation and yellow for wealth and success.
Flowers for September
Aster is a symbol of both September and of powerful love while the other flower, the morning glory, is a symbol of affection, something gentler and calmer.

Flowers for October
The marigold is the symbol of October with its bright and fierce colour representing fierce and undying love but also that you are happy with your life with the person.

The other flower is the cosmo, a symbol of order, peace and serenity. In the US, the calendula is also added for October.
Flowers for November
There is only one flower for November traditionally and this is the chrysanthemum with the different colours having subtle meanings. These include red for I love you, white for innocence and purity and yellow for a slighted love.

Flowers for December
The two flowers for December is the narcissus and the holly. The former tells your beloved that you don’t want them to change and are happy with them just as they are while the holly is a wish for domestic happiness.

Modern connections with Christmas have also led to the poinsettia being added to the December list, meaning good cheer and success. As well as the traditional red poinsettia, it also comes in white and pink.
A great card making idea
Birth month flowers are a fun way to send someone flowers, a gift or a card that has extra meaning, especially if they don’t have favourite flowers of their own. It is also a popular idea with people looking to buy handmade crafts and doesn’t require the work that personalised cards need.
